Mother’s Day Radiothon to Benefit Breast Cancer Patients a Huge Success!

Our annual Mother’s Day Radiothon took place on Friday, May 11th  at the Exploits Valley Mall in Grand Falls-Windsor.

This year’s event supported the purchase of a Breast Specimen Imaging Unit for the Diagnostic Imaging Department within our Regional Health Centre for the benefit of women who are yet to face breast cancer surgery.

We raised $85,000 during this event and concluded our fundraiser in July with proceeds from the Health Foundations Regatta - an annual fundraiser held at the Lewisporte Yacht Club each July.

This equipment is now on order!

The Breast Specimen Imaging Unit is a standalone unit that will be used in the operating room to verify excised breast tissue margins. It has a higher resolution than standard mammography systems.

This equipment will eliminate the need for samples to be taken to the radiology department for x-ray imaging, thus resulting in a quicker turnaround time for margin verification of the sampled tissue.

It will also provide a level of service not currently being provided at the CNRHC. This equipment will cost approximately $125,000 and is one of the Foundation’s biggest fundraising undertakings in over a decade!

More great news! The Department of Health & Community Services committed to match every single dollar that is received for the Breast Specimen Imaging Unit up to a total of $55,000!  This means that every dollar that was donated for this equipment during the Radiothon was instantly worth two dollars!
